naram-43: fun events
not all the competition takes place at the naram contest range. we have a
few fun contests planned for the naram-43 sport range. these are, as a
rule, low-key events which can serve as a change of pace for the
competitor and the sport flyer alike. all registered naram-43
participants are encouraged to participate in these events (must be 18
years of age or older to participate in level 1 and level 2 sport
scale).
fun events have been a part of mars's history since its founding in
1969. these were codified in the mars purple book. although it's been
many years since the mars purple book has been updated, we recently
dusted off a copy, and selected an event (the oldest) to run at
naram-43. we also added two sport scale events which our committee felt
would both serve as a showcase for craftsmanship and take advantage of
the excellent geneseo field. finally, we picked a new event, based on
the neat micro-maxx technology, to inspire innovation.
the rules are kept simple, in keeping with the low-key and fun nature of
the events. the goal is the most fun for the most people in the safest
manner, rather than the more intense competition to be found on the
contest range. so, from the purple book of mars comes the rules for the
first of the naram-43 fun events:
ping-pong ball spot landing
101.01 ping-pong ball spot landing comprises a single event, open to all
model rockets which can carry aloft a regulation ping-pong ball and
permit its recovery by free-fall in an essentially unharmed manner.
101.02 the object of ping-pong ball spot landing is to carry aloft a
regulation ping-pong ball in a model rocket, eject it from the model,
and cause it to land intact and as close as possible to a pre-designated
landing spot.
101.03 the entry must eject the ping-pong ball from the model at
ejection. the distance shall be measured from the ping-pong ball to the
designated spot. distances over 50 meters shall be recorded as "50+".
101.04 if the model does not eject the ping-pong ball at ejection, the
flight shall be disqualified. if the ping-pong ball is crushed or
substantially charred, the flight shall be disqualified.
101.05 no practice flights will be permitted.
101.06 each contestant shall be permitted one flight. the entry which
lands closest to the designated landing spot shall be declared the
winner.
special provision for naram-43:
if you disqualify your first flight, you shall be permitted another.
level 1 and level 2 sport scale
(under construction)
open micro maxx duration
127.01 open micro maxx duration comprises one event open to entries
which are propelled solely by engines with a total impulse of no more
than 0.25 newton-seconds apiece.
127.02 the object of open micro maxx duration is to attain maximum duration using one or more very small engines.
127.03 the entry must be propelled solely by engines posessing a total
impulse of not more than 0.25 newton-seconds each. the total impulse,
summed across all engines, may not exceed 160 newton-seconds for any
given flight, nor may the total mass of the propellant exceed 125 grams
in any given flight.
127.04 each entry will be timed in accordance with standard pink book rules regarding timed entries.
127.05 at check-in, an entry may be designated as a gliding entry. if so
designated, the gliding portion must be identified at that time, and
the gliding portion only shall be timed. if the portion of the entry
designated as the gliding portion does not glide, the flight will be
disqualified.
127.06 if an entry not designated as a gliding entry separates into two
or more unattached pieces, the flight will be disqualified.
127.07 each contestant shall be permitted two flights.
127.08 the returned entry with the greatest flight duration shall be the winner.
